“This may be the most dangerous time the world has seen in decades.” That is what Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JP Morgan, the world’s largest bank, told investors in early October.
Every empire in written history has rolled out the same playbook during its sunset years.
Inside the Empire, runaway debt forces the governing body to rapidly expand the money supply. The devaluation of currency inflates asset prices and widens the wealth gap between the haves and the have-nots. Populism explodes, as civil unrest erupts in response to seemingly any cultural divide.
Outside of the Empire, competitive powers start rising. Rarely is it just one rising counter-power; it is typically a syndicate of smaller nations who can pause their ideological differences to align against the lone superpower.
To simplify:
The Empire becomes insolvent and rapidly devalues the currency
Civil unrest erupts to a level that borders on civil war
An external competitor rises to challenge the existing empire
This is exactly what happened to the Portuguese Empire of the 15th Century.
Also to the Spanish Empire of the 16th century.
And to the Dutch Empire of the 17th century
And the British of the 19th century.
We are watching this playbook in real-time with the American Empire of the 20th century.
Five empires in 600 years should give us a hint at the expeditious nature with which power rotates around the globe.
But here is the thing - I am not convinced that the American Empire is in its sunset years - yet.
I do think that the world order is changing - but not in the way many expect.
