My 93 year old Dad would say that most people spend the first half of their lives to amass wealth yet spend the second half of life paying for their health. Health is the true wealth.
Yes, but even every day exercise guarantees nothing. Most of us know families where cancer seems to run through, no matter what. I believe health is in the genes more than people want to admit. Of course, the best exercise is pushing away from the table.
Oh my goodness! You can add motivational speaker to your list of accomplishments! Thank you so much for this essay, it is a fantastic read, and a totally realistic and optimistic approach to a new year. Just wow…..!
Stick to a plan and support our family (3 daughters) that works for me. And embrace the free Pacific Northwest Outdoors! Quitter's Friday is at the end of this week - stomp on it!
See you in Vancouver Jay, thank you for hosting the conference. I used to go to San Francisco when we lived in the Bay Area which is completely unfeasible for a family of five now.
Jay: I am so glad to read today that you have accepted Christ! I remember not long ago challenging you to read the New Testament... a challenge which I was surprised that you quickly accepted, despite your very busy life. In reading your essays, I have noticed you being drawn more to spiritual concerns, and it is wonderful to see the fulfillment of this in your profession of faith today.
As you continue to grow in your Christian faith, and your world and life view begins to conform to the teachings of the Lord, I want to encourage you to apply discernment as a top priority. There is so much bad teaching and bad theology out there masquerading as truth. My pastor for ten years was the late Dr. R.C.Sproul, and his ongoing ministry at LIGONIER.ORG provides some of the best videos, books, and teaching materials for the intelligent thinking Christian seeking to deeply understand God's Word. I encourage you to visit that website and avail yourself of their resources, many of which are free.
For almost 30 years, I have been the world's largest dealer of rare and antique Bibles, and I would also encourage you to take a moment to read the fascinating story of how we got God's Word in the English language by reading the illustrated article about this on my website at: https://greatsite.com/english-bible-history/
I say this because, by being grounded in a good understanding of our heritage as Christians, we are less likely to be pulled into various misunderstandings, false belief systems, and denominations which teach human-centric and accommodating views contradictory to the Bible.
If I can be of service to you in any way, please let me know. I wish you a blessed and prosperous new year!
Jay Martin: I believe your Substack account has just been hacked by someone pretending to be you. This reply above, supposedly from you, is clearly not something you would say. The second sentence has terrible grammar, "introducing to my subscribers asking how to start making" is a nonsense phrase showing no command of English. The next sentence speaks of "Mr.Ben" (with no space between the Mr. and the name... and it is only a first name given). The "title" assigned to this person is similarly inappropriate and weird, "personal Broker for a Profitable and Life-Changing Investment". Lastly, with no further explanation, a "WhatsApp" phone number is given. Whoever is doing this, trying to impersonate Jay Martin, is clearly not a native English speaker, and also has no understanding of how to use professional language or professional style to make the statement they are trying to make. Obviously, this is not coming from you. Jay, you should change your password for Substack immediately, and post a message disclaiming this hacking of your account.
Thank you John - they have been removed. It is not a hack per se, but scammers create accounts that appear to be mine (usually with a minor spelling difference, like two i's in Martin) and then attempt to sell products.
Oh, I understand... how clever. By creating an account that looks like yours, they can then comment and reply "As You" within your Substack threads, without actually hacking your account. Devious. I will keep this in mind. :)
This is a great reminder - comparison is the thief of all joy. You have to chart your own course, based on what fulfils you. Most people don't need to amass $100M to feel fulfilled.
Money and things don't fulfill. Obviously, we need a certain amount to be comfortable, but how often have we gotten what we really wanted, only for it to become something routine over time.
I have been reading your Sunday blog/newsletter for over two years. It has become important to me, better, and more applicable to my current position in life. So thank you. Focus, reduce distractions, and be grateful for what and who we are. I strive to do better. All positive messages that your writing helps me to aim at being a better person, for my family, myself and my community.
Life is a balance. I suspect those who push one thing in their lives to the exclusion of a lot of other things eventually wish they had been more balanced. Is one's name in lights better than the love and warmth of family? Unfortunately, as one gets older, one gets wiser, but one's life has already happened at that time.
